pattern: simplicity 2183. two down, one to go.
worth the wait: yes, because these separates are so wearable and still office-appropriate, easy to accessorize and great with a sweater. i need as many as i can get myself to make!
Simplicity 2183 (View 1): 1947; Teen-Age Two-Piece Dress: The long torso top, styled with a back neck and side opening, has gathers at the front side seams and darts at the back waistline. The flared skirt features and inverted pleat at the center front and back and joins to a yoke. In Style I, the top is accented with a Dutch collar and a bias fold at the lower edge. The three-quarter sleeve is finished with a cuff. Style II has long fitted sleeve and a high rounded neckline.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
waist gathers = true love. also, there’s a great youthful vibe happening around the pattern. since girls and teens don’t dress that way today, it’s easy to reinterpret even when you’re closer to 30 than to 20!

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
on the first version i made of this pattern, the only change i made was to remove the back neck zipper from the bodice and put in a front neck slit, since i prefer a more open collar to a closed one. the fit was pretty good (not perfect) and everything else fell into place.
version 2, i redrew the bodice pattern using a moulage, using the version of the original pattern not meant to include a collar. i widened the neckline slightly for a very narrow boatneck (wide enough to get over my head) and re-drafted the sleeve pattern so that the cuff was built in instead of separate and shaped.
version 3 i made as designed but using my moulage.
i’ve made two skirts straight out of the envelope with excellent results.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
i could have one of these in every color and i would still make more. the skirt is great, too–very classy, a good length and completely versatile.
great pattern, great look.
