advance 7837: ready for my date at the flamingo club…. (continuing my end-of-the-year UFO parade)

pattern: advance 7837.  i went with view 2 because i loved the short sleeve.  and how fab is that giant wing collar?

time in area 51:  3 weeks

excuses:  none!  it just took me a while to start it, and then i just had to finish it.  and then in between i had to fight the crowds near macy’s on christmas eve morning to get to jonathan embroidery for buttonholes.

how i finished it:  just did it.  it was definitely part of my christmas weekend sewing marathon, because i knew that if this top works out ok, i will make it over and over and over again.

worth the wait:  yes, because, wing collar!

to really get myself ready for a date with archie goodwin–and really, who wouldn’t want one?–i paired it with the high-waisted vogue 8425.  the whole outfit was inspired by the delightful francie swift in ” the doorbell rang,” part of the A&E original series “a nero wolfe mystery” that was on in 2000 and 2001.  francie is one of those great character actors that shows up all over the place–she’s been the murderer on law & order at least twice and was nate archibald’s mom on gossip girl.  but i think this is her best look:

gotta go–archie is waiting for me.

Pattern Description (Advance 7837):
Front-button shirtwaist blouse has deep V-neckline and spread wing collar. Armhole has deep shoulder and is slightly deeper at underarm. Darts at bust and torso. Version 1 has 3/4 length sleeve with soft folds, finished with wide buttoned cuff. Version 2 has short sleeve, also with soft folds and buttoned cuff. Your choice of fabric makes the blouse…for daytime or late-day wear.

Pattern Sizing:
sz 14/34B

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
the wing collar with the classic shirtwaist look, and the sleeves are adorable.

Fabric Used:
liberty of london tana lawn “mike” from purl soho

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
none.  i just re-drew the sizing based on my moulage.

Conclusion:
it’s obviously retro and still a classic, i bet it is great for all kinds of fabric.  this one will be sticking around.  the construction was simple and breezy, with a fold-over facing and easy-to-attach collar.

Pattern Description (Vogue 8425, OOP):
High-waisted pencil skirt with princess seams.

Pattern Sizing:
size 12, but i should have done a 10.  it is not as snug as i would like.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
the high waist was a great chance to play with a more retro look using a modern pattern, and i was eager to try boning in the waist of the skirt.

Fabric Used:
silk/wool blend from kashi at metro textiles, lined with a printed black silk also from kashi.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
none.  the pattern was exactly the look i was going for.  i added a lining, hand-picked the zipper, hemmed the whole thing with some lace and boned the waist.

Conclusion:
the basics of the pattern are strong and easy to work with, so most of the errors came through my laziness.  but i’m not sure how you could ever work with a waistband this high and not include boning–why do the instructions not suggest it?  also, i did not enjoy the instructions for the skirt vent, which do not include the possibility of a lining.  i really had to wing it and hope for the best.
